This modern cabin will sit on a remote lot in the Catskill area of upstate New York. The client wanted an aesthetically pleasing and energy-efficient cabin to use year-round. The house is designed to be off the grid i.e., completely sustainable without any outside services. Extensive studies were conducted examining the sun positions in summer and winter, and the shadows cast by the surrounding landscape and trees, as well as wind and temperature analysis in order to design the most efficient house possible. The conclusion was that solar energy was the best solution for the site. The design works to cool the house in the heat of the summer and warm the house in the cold winter months. The roof line and center core of services are designed to maximize heating and cooling. While efficient, this modern cabin spares no luxuries or comforts.
