This 19th-century townhouse in Greenwich Village is a four-story building with an owner’s triplex and a rental apartment on the ground floor. The clients wanted open floor plans and wall expanses for their art collection. Expressing a modern idiom within the historic shell, the parlor and second floors were reconfigured with sliding partitions that may be closed to create intimate rooms or opened to create continuous loft-like spaces that extend from the front of the house to the rear wall. Since the house does not have a rear garden space, the parlor floor’s rear wall was replaced with a glass skin which opens onto a glass floored terrace to take advantage of the neighboring gardens. This translucent terrace is elevated to allow light into the basement apartment and simultaneously reflects the gardens in the kitchen and entertaining space on the parlor floor.
